Global Bed Bug Summit 2016

As industry leaders in bed bug treatment, we participate in conferences around the country to stay on top of bed bug control techniques and trends. In December 2016, we attended the Global Bed Bug Summit hosted by the National Pest Management Association, and we want to share a few of the things we learned with you to help prevent infestations in your homes and communities.

Bed Bug Quick Facts

The main reason bedbug infestations are on the rise in the U.S. is because of a lack of education. Travel, used furniture, and bed bug’s growing intolerance to insecticide have contributed to the bed bug epidemic as well, but education is crucial in reducing the number of infestations. So we have prepared a few quick facts that everyone should know about bed bugs to help prevent bed bugs.

  • Bed bugs prefer to be where other bed bugs have been. If you have had an infestation in the past, talk to your bed bug exterminator about yearly spring cleanings and mattress encasements.
  • Early detection is the key to eradication. Look for early signs of bed bugs such as:
    • Black fecal spots
    • Shed skins and eggshells
    • Live bed bugs (nymphs and adults)
    • Blood stains from crushed bugs
    • Welts on exposed skin
    • Distinctive “buggy” odor (in severe infestations)
  • It takes time for bed bugs to develop. Even if you haven’t traveled in months, you still might have bed bugs. The total development time for a bed bug is:
    • 21 days @ 86°
    • 120 days @ 65°
  • Bed bug bombs are very ineffective. Complete bed bug eradication usually requires a combination of heat and industrial grade organic solutions.
  • Clutter and cold spots can affect bed bug treatments. Professionals like Custom Bed Bug can monitor for cold spots, but families need to reduce clutter before treatments to kill bed bugs.
